Berthoud Fire Protection District responded to a bale haystack fire on July 23, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. in the 2000 block of County Road 46.

Out of three stacks of one ton bales, one survived while the other two caught on fire. While responders arrived in good time, 30 mph wind gusts inhibited the ability to quickly extinguish the fire. However, the property owner lent a hand to crews and was able to move bales to prevent the fire from spreading.

According to a press release from Berthoud Fire Protection District, while no structures were threatened by the fire, a 3-tender water shuttle was used to funnel water to the fire to keep it under control. Loveland Fire Rescue Authority and Front Range Fire Rescue joined the effort making a total of nine engines on scene.

After alternating crews throughout the night, emergency responders cleared at 5 a.m. the morning of July 24, 2021. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
