Border Agents Seize 385 Pounds of Bologna

U.S. Customs and Border agents have seized 385 pounds of lunch meat that bologna smugglers were trying to sneak into the country! Thank God our bologna sniffing dogs were able to stop this atrocity! Everyone knows that bologna is a gateway meat for other questionable delicacies like headcheese and liverwurst.  

KOAT reports U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Santa Teresa, New Mexico seized 35 rolls of Mexican bologna from a pickup truck trying to enter the U.S. last Friday. 385 pounds of bologna has a street value of  nearly $2,700.

Officials found the bologna when they stopped a pickup truck trying to enter the U.S. The 33-year-old driver, who is from Mexico, was on the receiving end of $1,000 fine, while his meats were taken by the CBP.

Why is the government cracking down on lunch meat that's highly prized by the kindergarten demographic? Santa Teresa Port Director Grace Gomez said, "This is a prohibited product because it is made from pork and has the potential for introducing foreign animal diseases to the U.S. pork industry."

Gomez also said this bologna bust is a rarity, adding, "This seizure really stands out because when we seize bologna it is usually a small quantity or at most a roll or two."
