After the CDC had recommended a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for moderate to severely immunocompromised people, the state of Colorado has followed suit. In a public press release from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the state of Colorado is advising vaccination providers across Colorado to provide a third dose.

Diana Herrero, Deputy Director, Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response at CDPHE, reassures that the state has enough vaccine inventory to accomodate the additional dose.

Herrero says the additional dose will increase the protection for immunocompromised and high-risk Coloradans.

It's recommended that people receive the third dose at least 28 days after their second dose of either Pfizer or Moderna. It's also recommended by the CDC that people stick to the same mRNA vaccine they received for their first two doses.

Additional doses, like the original two, will also be free to the public.

Across the country, it still stands that the vaccine alone is not enough to protect and prevent. Colorado suggests that immunocompromised people, even those who have received the third shot, should still wear masks, social distance and avoid crowded, poorly ventilated areas.

The state of Colorado is still offering $100 Walmart giftcards for people 12 years old and up who receive the first or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

As of August 13, 2021, Colorado has seen over 500,000 new cases and over 7,000 deaths due to COVID-19. However, hospitalizations are currently at 520, which is not a large increase from the latest hospitalization number that was accurate when Governor Jared Polis gave his last COVID-19 press conference update.
