Colorado Voters to Decide On Abortion Restriction Law

Colorado voters will head to the primary elections in November to decide on a landmark ban on abortions after the 22nd week of pregnancy.

The ban in question, proposed Initiative 120, would restrict access to abortions in Colorado. Supporters of the bill, titled "Prohibition on Late-Term Abortion," collected enough signatures to make the November ballot.

According to the Denver Post, the bill would make it illegal for a physician (or anyone else) to terminate a pregnancy (or attempt to) if a fetus is at least 22 weeks old. However, there are exemptions to the proposed law. If a woman's life is at risk due to the pregnancy, the physician can perform the procedure past 22 weeks, but they must consult with a colleague beforehand.

If the law passes, any physician caught breaking the law would be guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor and be issued a fine. Physicians would also face disciplinary action by the state medical board and suspension of their license for at least three years.
