A cow is responsible for a fatal Monday (August 3) car crash in Weld County.

According to The Greeley Tribune, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. that night near Weld County Road 49, when a Keenesburg man, 33, struck a cow in the middle of the road while driving west on Colo. 52 in his 2016 Ford pickup truck.

After striking the animal, the man veered into the eastbound lanes. Then he hit a 2012 Mercedes SUV carrying a 48-year-old Bennett woman and a 12-year-old female passenger head-on.

Authorities transferred the woman to the University of Colorado Hospital, where she passed away of her injuries. Her passenger survived the crash with moderate injuries, while the Keenesburg man suffered life-threatening injuries.

Colorado State Patrol is currently investigating the incident.
