Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins Going Green
Edora Pool Ice Center (EPIC) in Fort Collins is going green. EPIC is leasing to buy an electric ice resurfacer. It is projected to save the facility about $20 per day in fuel costs. It is the first electronic ice resurfacer machine to be purchased by the City of Fort Collins and the second in the state of Colorado.
EPIC’s new electric ice resurfacer is manufactured by Resurfice, headquartered in Elmira, Ontario, Canada. Resurfice has been manufacturing Olympia ice resurfacers for more than 50 years. The Olympia IceBear is of stainless-steel construction and capable of spreading a new coat of ice in minutes. The IceBear uses electric energy as its power source. EPIC’s previous ice resurfacer ran on propane gas.
I have always thought it was called a Zamboni, but that's a brand name like Kleenex or Band-Aid.
Why is EPIC Going Green?
Cost and energy savings were the primary motivation in selecting an electric ice resurfacer.
- The previous ice resurfacer used more than 26,000 gallons of propane fuel and cost more than $85,000 in maintenance over four decades.
- The new electric ice resurfacer will not require propane fuel and will rely solely on electricity.
The total cost of the machine is $140,000.
EPIC is located at 1801 Riverside Avenue.
