There are two thoughts I have when it comes to comparing restaurant food to a home cooked meal – the more complicated restaurant dishes taste great because they are so difficult to make at home, while on the other hand – the comfort foods can’t compare to family cooking. You don’t often make blue cod resting on a shrimp and green pea risotto, with a trio of steamed mussels with a tarragon, almond and orange hollandaise and lemon oil at home; but you can sure bang out a killer baked macaroni and cheese with your mom’s recipe.

I’ve never really found a restaurant that serves good old American classic comfort foods with flavor and flair that goes beyond what I can do at home – until I ate at Steuben’s in Denver. There, we ate things that melted in our mouths, filled our stomachs, and comforted our minds with a quality and deliciousness that was lovely.

Steuben’s Food Service (the whole concept name) opened in uptown Denver in 2006 after Executive Chef Brandon Biederman did so well with Vesta Dipping Grill – Steuben’s sibling restaurant. The team named the place after a family members’ restaurant in Boston that was a hoppin’ place from the 1940′s-1960′s, and strive to recreate those familiar comfort foods with an emphasis on superior quality. They launched their food truck in 2010, and were featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-In’s, and Dives in 2011…
