Fern Lake Fire Acting Predictably
Thick smoke, difficult conditions and uncertainty abound in the battle against the Fern Lake Fire that is burning inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Gusty winds caused problems for firefighters throughout the day yesterday and aircraft even had trouble determining the size of the fire because of the high winds. According to the Estes Park Trail Gazette, the best estimate for the fire was 600 acres and growing.
The best news from the site of the fire was that it was fairly quiet through Wednesday night and, though it was advancing, was behaving as firefighters expected. There was no containment of the fire as of this morning.
Breezy conditions are expected today and gusty winds could return tonight. There is a chance of showers through Saturday, which could help efforts, though heavy winds may counteract that.
