When it comes to living in Fort Collins, a common complaint is often the lack of affordable, quality housing for the city's current and incoming residents. Making it their mission to help resolve this issue, Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity is in the works of developing a brand new housing project, which began with a special ground blessing ceremony on the morning of June 21.

Located on the southeast corner of Harmony and Taft Hill roads, the Harmony Cottages project is the biggest housing development that Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity has ever taken on to build. Once completed, the neighborhood will consist of 44 duplex units and four single-family homes on 4.45 acres of land. The units will feature attached garages and small private yards, along with a mini-park and courtyards maximizing the grassy, open spaces, surrounded by white-picket fences. The idea is to increase a sense of community while also supporting the city's Affordable Housing Strategic Plan.

Mayor Troxwell was present for Tuesday morning's ground-breaking festivities, giving a speech that not only highlighted the goal of bringing affordable housing to Fort Collins, but also the huge impact that Habitat for Humanity has had thus far in assisting with that objective. Another exciting element to the ceremony was the burial of a time capsule that is intended to be unearthed ten years from now, once all 48 families are fully settled into the community.

Home construction for the Harmony Cottages is set to begin in the spring of 2017. Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity is currently seeking house sponsors, as well as volunteers to help with upcoming projects. Interested in spending some time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity?
