Police are investigating a Fort Collins break-in that resulted in the death of the home intruder.

According to The Coloradoan, the incident occurred around 1:13 a.m. on Sunday (August 23) at The Wyatt apartments on Strauss Cabin Road, when an unidentified man broke into his neighbor's apartment.

One of the apartment's occupants then shot the man, who later died at the UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies.

Three hours prior to the break-in, police were called to perform a welfare check on the man, who was reportedly suffering from a mental health crisis in his own apartment.

However, the man refused any help from authorities.

Officials are still investigating the incident, and the resident who shot the man is currently not facing any charges.
