Monday, August 6 is National Root Beer Float Day — and what's even sweeter about it, is the fact that root beer floats were originally invented right here in Colorado!

The story goes, that nearly 125 years ago, Cripple Creek tavern owner, Frank Wisner, was inspired by the moon shining onto the snowy peaks of the mountains outside his window, and therefore, put a scoop of vanilla ice cream right on top of a mug of frothy root beer. At first, this new creation was called "Black Cow Mountain," and was then shortened to just "Black Cow," before finally being called a Root Beer Float.

In celebration of the day, A&W Restaurants, are serving up free, small root beer floats from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
