Hard to Believe It Was 12 Years Ago That I Had My Heart Attack
One week from today will mark the 12th anniversary of one of the most terrifying days of my life. It was a day I will never forget and glad I won't because it is one I need to remember. It was 12 years ago January 21st that I had a heart attack and thought this beautiful life of mine was going to end. Little did I know that that event would change my life for the better. I started to pay attention to what I was doing to myself and it also made me realize that if there is something you want in this life, you need to do it now. I bought my first Harley just a couple months after the attack because I figured you never know when your time will come.
It was a snowy day and I had been out shoveling before the Colts were about to play the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game (which we know New England plays in every year). I came inside and felt a pain in the back of my shoulder. I had been feeling discomfort there for a couple of days but didn’t think anything of it. The pain then started to go down my arm and hit my chest. I remember clutching my chest and feeling fear fill my body. My daughter got a frightened look on her face and asked if I was ok. She then asked if I needed pie. I thought about it and figured that a hospital might be a better option. It had to be serious if I turned down pie. I had never felt anything like this before. The pain stopped me in my tracks and I knew this was something serious. I got a terrified look on my face and told my wife we had to go and go now. I know now that calling an ambulance would have been the smart thing to do but we were scared and panicked so I just jumped in the car and had Kyla drive me to emergency room.
We went to the desk and they knew right away I was having a heart attack. They asked me to rate my pain between 1 and 10 and I used an “F” word that was not five or four to describe the pain. It was the worst pain I had ever felt. They wheeled me in and were able to put a stent in my heart to get the blood flowing and make me better. It was amazing relief. The first thing I did when I came to was ask who had won the game and I was thrilled to hear that Peyton and Colts had beaten Brady and the Patriots and were going to the Super Bowl. I never want to go through that again. I truly felt the love of the K99 family throughout that whole ordeal. I had so many flowers and gifts that filled my room and my heart.
Take care of yourself and never ignore the warning signs your body is giving you. Listen and react and it could save your life. I am so happy to still be here and plan on sticking around for a long long time. I have a lot of work yet to be done.
