Highlights From an Unforgettable Trip to the ACM Awards – Brian’s Blog
I am so lucky to get to do what I do for a living. I live a charmed life and I will never take it for granted. I get to be on the radio and share my life with you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the blessings that have come from your support.
Because of you being a part of the K99 family the Good Morning Guys were nominated for an ACM award this year. Todd and I decided we would go to Dallas and represent us at the show. What an amazing trip! I have so many memories I will treasure forever.
We were staying at a hotel in Arlington and the band Alabama happened to be staying at the same hotel. I was outside on a bench when I saw Jeff Cook of Alabama out front on his phone. When I knew he was done talking on the phone I thanked him for his music and how it was the sound that got me into country music in the first place. Jeff walked over and sat down with me for nearly an hour and played me song after song on his phone of music he was working on and solo projects he had done. It was so cool to sit next to him and become friends. He got my address and said he would be sending me some music. I was honored.
We also went to a private party hosted by Kid Rock. I had never met him before and was excited to get the chance to say some words to him. It was a small club and a small group of people. The room was full of cigar smoke and whiskey just as you would expect. Kid Rock was working his way around the room talking to all of us. When he came up to me we hit it off right away. I tend to have a bit of rebel side myself and look the part. We started singing Merle Haggard songs to each other and then he started rapping a new song he had written that he thought I could relate too. He was just like the kind of dude I would have hung out with in high school. He had trouble pronouncing my wife Kyla's name and was hilarious in trying. It is a memory Kyla and I will never forget.
We attended a special radio awards ceremony hosted by Big & Rich the night before the big awards show. I got the opportunity to have a deep talk about music with John Rich. What a treat that was. John and I connected and he was so cool to talk with. This guy takes his music serious and I was blown away to get to have this conversation.
Perhaps my favorite event was a brunch hosted by Steamsound Records featuring Dakota Bradley, Austin Webb and Kristian Bush. Dakota and Austin are buddies of ours so it was great to hang out with friends. I love those guys. I had only met Kristian Bush once very briefly and never had the chance to really talk to him until this brunch. I had always loved his music with Sugarland and his solo hit "Trailer Hitch" is one my favorite songs of the past year. I had to chance to visit with this amazing man and tell him what his music has meant to me. I actually made him tear up. That touched me in a way you cannot imagine.
The big finale was the ACM Awards. What a thrill to be in AT&T Stadium for this record setting event. We were seated right behind stages which we thought was a bummer until we saw that it was were they seated all the real celebrities. We were in good company. While I was sitting in my aisle seat Dr. Phil and his bride walked right by me. He is big! I got high fives from Eddie Montgomery, Clay Walker put his hand on my shoulder twice. Kelsea Ballerini stopped to talk as did Kellie Picker and many more. We were gypsies in the palace. It was a great show and Todd even cried when Taylor Swift's mother introduced her on the show. I told him I was posting this picture. Todd is sensitive man.
What a great time we had. Thank you for helping make our dreams come true. I will never forget it.
