How Duck Dynasty Helped The Pittsburgh Steelers Win 4 Super Bowls – Brian’s Blog

The most exciting part of my week is Wednesday night when new episodes of Duck Dynasty air. I am completely nuts over this show. I love Willie, Si, Phil, Jase and the whole twisted bunch. This may be the best thing that has happened to television since football.

Speaking of football, did you know that Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty is partially responsible for the Pittsburgh Steelers winning 4 Super Bowls in the 70's?  Back in the mid 60's the starting quarterback at Louisiana Tech University was the one and only Phil Robertson. Phil was a very talented QB who was courted by the Washington Redskins among others. When his senior season came around Phil decided he was much more interested in hunting than football and gave up his final season to pursue his duck hunting dreams. The backup quarterback on the roster who took over the starting position was none other than Terry Bradshaw who went on to win 4 Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Imagine how different sports and television would be if this would have never happened.

Terry mentions Phil in his autobiography It's Only A Game...

“The quarterback playing ahead of me, Phil Robertson, loved hunting more than he loved football. He’d come to practice directly from the woods, squirrel tails hanging out of his pockets, duck feathers on his clothes. Clearly he was a fine shot, so no one complained too much.”

According to Phil there was a reason he was ahead of Bradshaw on the depth chart..

. “To put it bluntly, he was very happy that I chose ducks because he moved up a slot. I was blessed with a good arm, or Bradshaw wouldn’t have been playing second string to me."

I would say it turned out great for me. I would rather watch Phil and his family every Wednesday night than watch him wear a helmet on Sundays...hard to chin strap that beard.
