So just how many drugs were taken back by the Fort Collins Police Department on National Prescription Drug-Take-Back Day? It's probably more than you think.  It certainly was more than I thought it would be.

According to a press release from Fort Collins Police Services:

Residents turned in 993 pounds of unused, unneeded, and expired over-the-counter and prescription medications to the Fort Collins Police on Saturday, April 27th, 2013.  Last September, over 488,395 pounds or 244 tons of prescription drugs were collected Nationwide at sites operated by the DEA and state and local law enforcement.

This year's national numbers are are still being added up.

WHY TURN IN YOUR OLD PRESCRIPTIONS?

Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can cause pollution of lakes, streams and water supplies and pose potential safety and health hazards.
