Update 9/1/17 @ 5 a.m.

The Johnson Creek Fire is now 100% contained. The fire did receive some light precipitation Thursday, supporting firefighting efforts. The State’s MMA (Multi-Mission Aircraft) flew over the fire today and did not find any heat sources outside the fireline.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire through the week. Unless conditions change, this will be the final update for the Johnson Creek Fire. Thanks to all who supported the firefighting efforts!

Update 8/31/17 @ 1:15 p.m.

The Johnson Creek Fire is estimated at 90% containment and holding at 13.2 acres. Firefighters will continue to work on securing the perimeter today, as well as mopping up where they can safely do so. Road 337 remains closed in the fire vicinity. Smoke will continue to be visible.

Update 8/31/17 @ 5 a.m.

Firefighters had to battle more wind Wednesday on the Johnson Creek Fire but were able to hold the line already established. Air resources continued to support the fire throughout the day. The fire is 13.2 acres with 75% containment.

Update 8/30/17 @ 9:30 a.m.

Burnout operations went well last night on the Johnson Creek Fire near the Wyoming border. The fire is estimated at 14 acres with 75% containment. Firefighters and heavy equipment will be working to secure the perimeter of the fire today. The fire was human caused. Smoke will continue to be visible in the area. Roads and trails remain closed in the area. Safety related to snags, due to beetle mortality and the fire, continues to be a priority.

A wildfire is burning near the Colorado/Wyoming border. The Johnson Creek Fire is burning 3.5 acres in the Roosevelt National Forest 2 miles south of the Wyoming border and 8 miles northwest of Hohnholz Lake. Fire activity picked up around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, however firefighters haven’t seen significant growth.

A helicopter, air attack, 2 dozers, 2 engines, a Type 2 hand crew and a harvester, have been ordered. No structures are immediately threatened. Smoke is visible in the area, including from Highway 287.

This area was hit heavily by the mountain pine beetle, affecting about 70% of the trees. Firefighters are utilizing natural barriers to support their fire suppression efforts and working on line construction on the west side of the fire. A road and area closure is now in place for the fire area.
