Medal Of Honor Recipient Major Ed Freeman One Of My Many Hero’s

Here is a story that I would have never known about had it not been for Ron Bland and Facebook.  It's a story of a real hero.  A man braver than anyone I know and sacrificed himself over and over for total strangers. Vietnam...a story that never ends.

Let me set the stage. It was November 14th, 1965 in the Ia Drang Valley.  Captain Ed Freeman and his unit transported a battalion of American soldiers to the Ia Drang Valley. After they made it back to their base, they learned that the soldiers had come under intense fire and were taking heavy casualties.

Enemy fire around the landing zones (less than a hundred yards) was so heavy that the LZ was closed to all Medevac helicopters. Freeman and his commander, Major Bruce Crandall, volunteered to fly their unarmed, lightly armored UH-1 Huey and get them out. Freeman made a total of fourteen trips bringing in water and ammunition and taking out wounded soldiers under heavy enemy fire in what was later named the Battle of Ia Drang. No one knew at the time he himself had been shot 4 different times during fight.

Freeman was subsequently promoted to the rank of Major, designated as a Master Army Aviator, and was sent home from Vietnam in 1966. Although he died in 2008, this story is one that should never be forgotten.
