A lot of people now a days are making some extra money by renting out their properties if they are out of town, or even invest in properties to use as short term rentals — AirBNB being the most popular.

If you are one of those people then pay close attention.

According to The Coloradoan, Larimer County homeowners who rent their properties short-term will be required to pay a fee to have their homes inspected and permitted beginning on Tuesday.

You will have to pay $300 to get your permit and inspection to make sure you are compliant.

The good news is there is a 20 percent discount if you do it right away. The bad news, however, if you do not do it for the first year it goes up to $600 for the second year.

The main reason for the inspections is for renters safety.  Emergency exits out of the property, CO2 and Smoke detectors are the biggest concerns.

Properly ventilated gas appliances and handrails on staircases are a couple of other things they will be looking at.

Be sure to get all the information and proper permits on the Larimer County website, or at the Larimer County Building located at 200 W Oak St in Fort Collins.
