Police Arrest Man for Shooting at Fort Collins Home

Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) have a arrested a man for shooting at a Fort Collins home on Tuesday (June 17), according to a press release from the City of Fort Collins.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. that evening, when officers were developing a safety plan for a welfare check on 51-year-old Paul Schmukal, who was reportedly unstable and had access to multiple weapons.

Police then received a report that someone was shooting at a home in the 2500 block of Shields Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers determined that Schmukal was the shooter. He ignored their verbal requests to comply, so police had to take him into custody with the use of a K9 Unit.

Authorities took Schmukal to a local hospital for minor injuries from the K9, and subsequently booked him into the Larimer County Jail, where he is facing charges of Reckless Endangerment, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, and Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.

Schmukal did not injure anyone during the incident; however, he caused significant damage to the victim's home.

"Thankfully, neighbors and other innocent bystanders were not harmed during this dangerous incident," said Assistant Chief John Feyen in the release. "I'm grateful for the organized, rapid response by officers who resolved this situation quickly and safely."
