Polis: "Major Surge" in Fort Collins COVID-19 Hospitalizations

In a letter written to Vice President Mike Pence, Colorado governor Jared Polis said Fort Collins is seeing a "major surge" in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

In the March 28 letter, Governor Polis called Colorado a "crisis level situation" when referring to supplies at Colorado hospitals. He went on to explain that most of Colorado has a lower ICU bed count than the national average.

The governor even mentioned Fort Collins by name, stating:

Fort Collins is experiencing a major surge in hospitalizations, but only have 1⁄3 of the national
average for per capita ICU beds.

UCHealth spokesperson Kelly Tracer told the Coloradoan that they're working to project what the surge will look like, where they can add additional ICU rooms and who the staff will be.

As of Thursday morning, there were 3,342 cases of COVID-19 in Colorado, including 127 in Larimer County. Of those, 620 people had been hospitalized and 80 people had died.

Larimer County is currently transforming the Budweiser Events Center into a makeshift medical center to house and treat the homeless residents that test positive for COVID-19.
