The illness known as "Rabbit Fever" has hit Larimer County.

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment confirmed Friday in a press release that a rabbit tested positive for the infectious disease formally known as Tularemia.

A Larimer County neighborhood had recently seen an outbreak of the disease that killed numerous rabbits.

All warm-blooded animals are susceptible to Tularemia but it is most common in rabbits.

Humans can also contract "rabbit fever" through handling of infested animals or the bites of infected insects like ticks and deer flies. Since 2009 there have been 18 human cases reported in Larimer County.

Typical signs of infection in humans may include fever, chills, headache, swollen and painful lymph glands, and fatigue.

"Rabbit fever" can be treated effectively with antibiotics.
