The final installment of the 2010s Star Wars trilogy is turning heads for a number of reasons, including the fact that the film features the franchise's first-ever same-sex kiss.

Nine films into the series, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker features the franchise's first intimate moment between LGBTQ+ characters. It's also reportedly the first Disney-owned film to depict a live action same-sex kiss scene.

The kiss reportedly takes place during a celebratory moment for the Resistance, with lesser-known female characters sharing a kiss. Although the film has not been released to the public, numerous media outlets including The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed the scene's authenticity.

Prior to the premiere and media screenings, director J.J. Abrams hinted at the possibility of LGBTQ+ representation. “And in the case of the LGBTQ+ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams told Variety in an interview. His goal was to make the galaxy inclusive and ensure that the new film's universe “looked more the way the world looks than not.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
