Greyrock Trail Opens Following Hewlett Fire, Some Smoke Might Still Be Visible
Greyrock Trail northwest of Fort Collins is reopening as of Friday, June 1, 2012. The Hewlett Gulch Trail is closed for today as crews work in the burned area. The US Forest Service released information Friday afternoon that crews are still working areas near the burn area of the Hewlett Fire where there are some hot spots.

The Hewlett Fire northwest of Fort Collins in the Poudre Canyon was 94 percent contained as of last night. Authorities  expect to have the fire fully contained by tonight (Tuesday, 5/22). The U.S. Attorney’s Office says a camper started the fire with an outdoor stove in the Roosevelt National Forest and was unable to stamp it out.

The Hewlett Fire, burning since Monday iin the Poudre Canyon, is now 85% contained. All evacuations and the Highway 14 road closure were lifted as of 7 pm Friday. Everyone is reminded that there is still fire burning, and to expect firefighters and firefighting equipment in the area. Drive slowly; watch out.

The Hewlett Fire northwest of Fort Collins continues to spread and more evacuations have been ordered this afternoon. The National Forest Service announced this morning that the Hewlett Fire burning in the Poudre Canyon is expanding. Just under 1000 acres yesterday, the fire has expanded to 5000 acreas, and is only 5% contained. Approximately 200 firefighters were working the fire yesterday. That number is expected to nearly double today.

When I left for work early yesterday morning from Fort Collins, you could smell the smoke in the air from the Hewlett Fire, which has burned over 982 acres.  When I arrived home from work in the early afternoon you could see giant plumes of smoke.  It wasn't long before you could see it, smell it, taste it, & feel it!
