During the winter months, hotel rooms at Colorado ski resorts can get to be pretty pricey — some charging upwards of $400 or more a night. It's interesting in the summer though, that the most expensive travel destinations in the state are not these same cities.

CheapHotels.org recently published a survey, where they not only revealed the most expensive summer destinations in the entire country, but also specifically throughout the state of Colorado. It turns out, that when the hotter months come around, the town of Boulder is actually the most expensive in terms of lodging. To get their results, the travel website looked at hotel rates of the 20 most popular destinations in the Centennial State, using August 2018 as a basis for comparison.

The survey showed that a summer night's stay in Boulder will set a guest back an average of $204 - and that's for the city's most affordable double room. Fort Collins actually came in second place, at $184 a night. Aspen was the first resort town to make it on the list, coming in at #3. It should be noted that the survey excluded hotels and inns lacking a central location and those with less than a 3-star rating. Based on the survey, visitors looking for the cheapest summer getaway should plan a trip to Pagosa Springs.

The table below compares the top 20 destinations in Colorado based on the average rate for their cheapest available double room during August 1 to 31, 2018.
