  • Stay hydrated. Liquids (such as  water, juice, etc.) and honey helps with congestion and deters dehydration. Avoid things like alcohol and caffeine, as this makes dehydration worse.
  • Rest.Your body needs time to recover.
  • Soothe your sore throat. A saltwater gargle which is about half of a teaspoon of salt stirred in a glass of warm water. This relieve a sore and scratchy throat temporarily. Ice cubes, throat sprays, cough soothing candies might help as well.
  • Combat stuffiness. Saline nasal sprays help relieve congestion and a stuffy nose. Use caution and as directed for infants.
  • Relieve pain. With children 6 months and younger acetaminophen is the way to go, but with children older than 6 months, either acetaminophen or ibuprofen is okay.
  • Sip warm liquids. A cup of hot water, soups, tea, etc. will sooth and could ease congestion.
  • Add moisture to the air. A humidifier adds moisture to your home, helping with congestion.
  • Over-the-counter cold and cough medications. Using over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines and pain relievers might offer some symptom relief. But please note that these won't prevent or shorten a cold.
