Weld County Warns About Uptick of Crime at Storage Lots

The Weld County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a recent crime uptick occurring at storage lots, especially on the south side of the county.

The sheriff's office noted that they have seen a significant increase in criminal activity at storage lots since the beginning of Spring, and have taken numerous reports of stolen items. Among the stolen items include catalytic converters, generators, tools, electronics and household items that were stolen from inside recreational vehicles. Deputies say that propane tanks and batteries have also been heavily targeted by thieves.

In the last four weeks alone, RV storage locations have have accounted for 24% of all theft, burglary and auto prowl cases in Weld County. According to the sheriff's office, most of the criminal activity is taking place on the south end of the county, where at least 22 different storage businesses are located.

The reason that thieves target storage lots, is because oftentimes, it can take individuals a while to realize they have been victimized, since they don't usually visit the location on a daily basis.

To better prevent theft and other crimes from occurring within storage lots, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office recommends residents regularly visit their storage locker/lot to make sure items are secure. Other tips include buying high-quality locks to protect belongings, secure loose items like propane tanks inside a locked RV or trailer, and make sure the entrances have secured access. It's also helpful if there are security cameras on the property.
